From fragile early aircraft to powerful WWII bombers, explore how aerial warfare—and the bombs themselves—evolved in just three decades.

The advent of the heavy bomber: inception to the late 1930s

Starting with the first attempted bombing raid and the lack of development of the bomber prior to The Great War, this talk will look at the development of the bomber both during the war and through to the outbreak of the Second World War.

It will take in early designs that were barely different in size to the scouts and fighters of the time, the creation of the first bombers to carry a large payload and their continued development through to all metal monoplanes of the late 1930s.

Alongside this is a look at the development of bombs themselves, from the first handheld 20lb bombs to 1,000 lb plus bombs of the same period.

The presentation will take in a weapon of war, unheard of in 1910, that was initially both deadly and terrifying, but was nothing compared to the death and destruction it brought just 25 to 30 years later.
