William Schaw Lindsay started life as a poverty-stricken orphan who went to sea and rose from cabin boy to captain. By his late 30's, he was a shipping tycoon and would eventually own one of the largest shipping companies in the world, with 22 ships, some of which were even employed as troop transporters in the Crimean War.

He met Abraham Lincoln and Isambard Kingdom Brunel amongst many other celebrities!  In 1854, he also became an MP.
