Discover how happiness and “joyspan” can help us age well, thrive, and lead more fulfilled, connected lives
In this talk, Jonathan will combine two areas relating to ageing. The first is happiness. The happiest time of life can be as we get older. It is something we all want but is in fact not an elusive thing we spend a lifetime chasing, but something each of us can cultivate in the everyday moments of our lives. The second is joyspan. It’s not the length of your life that matters but the quality of your life. Based on science and through a series of ideas and reflective exercises he hopes to inspire you to thrive and lead happy, fulfilled and contented lives.
About Dr. Jonathan Doherty
Jonathan is Subject Adviser for Ageing and Learning. Why ageing and learning? He says that both these topics underpin all activities of the u3as. These are the “golden threads” and ones he is passionate about sharing with you.
Ageing, is about the changes in later life and a stage to celebrate the creativity, adaptability and wisdom of those who have left formal education. Learning is for life and his mantra is, “Never stop learning!” I put the two aspects together as a perfect fit, because lifelong learning is such a vital part of wellbeing.
He is a recently retired university lecturer, teaching in psychology and education. As an academic he worked as a national education advisor providing support to teachers, schools and educational organisations. He is a published author with a passion for learning. He writes for Sources and the u3a matters magazine, distils research into ageing and learning and aims to be a point of reference for members’ queries on-line.
About Future Lives
This event is part of the Future Lives series of talks; the u3a’s Future Lives group explores how we can have a better later life, aiming to challenge attitudes and break down physical barriers that restrict people as they get older. We want to use our collective voice to bring about change. Find out more on the Future Lives webpage.
