Professor Jonathan Mant explores the pros and cons of earlier identification of risk factors for stroke such as atrial fibrillation.
This event is hosted by the u3a Science Network with speaker Professor Jonathan Mant.
There is much we can do to prevent stroke. What part should screening play in this? I will use the example of screening for atrial fibrillation, which is currently the focus of a large trial in over 100,000 people that I am leading, to explore the arguments for and against screening. I will then consider screening for other risk factors for stroke, such as high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol, and the extent to which screening might (or might not) play a central role in our cardiovascular health.
About the speaker, Professor Jonathan Mant
I qualified as a doctor in 1985 at Guy's Hospital in London having done my pre-clinical medical degree in Cambridge from 1979 to 1982. I am a public health doctor by training and have been based in University departments of public health and primary care since 1992 in Oxford, Birmingham and Cambridge , where I am professor of primary care research (since 2008). Much of my research has focused on the prevention of stroke in community settings, particularly through identification and treatment of atrial fibrillation and hypertension.
